ABSTRACT Elachista synethes was recently recognized as an alien species in northern Chile, where its larvae mine the rescue grass Bromus catharticus (Poaceae). In order to provide the necessary information to allow field detection of E. synethes during early ontogeny, we conducted a morphological reappraisal of the immature stages of this leaf-miner moth, based on light and scanning electron microscopy, including the first descriptions of the egg and the first-instar larva. This is the first report of the existence of an apodal early larva for a species of Elachista Treitschke. The legs and prolegs are absent in the first two instars, but are well developed in the last two. Additional observations on the life history are also provided, including a... |

A new genus, Podkova, is described from Brazil to accommodate its type-species P. hirsuta, sp. n. The genus has a peculiar appearance, the main features of which are the small compact body with coarsely pilose dorsal parts of the head and mesosoma, including median part of propodeum, head with sharp frontal carina of horse-shoe shape, delimiting broad facial cavity with rather short antennae, and a sharp occipital carina stretching posteriorly down along hind margins of eyes. By these features, Podkova resembles the genus Alachua Schauff and Boucek, but differs distinctly by having strong frontal carina on the head and the prepectus hardly overlapped by the anterior margin of mesosternum. Possible affinities to some other entedonine genera are discussed. |

ABSTRACT A new species of Aspidoras from the rio da Dona basin, a small coastal river drainage in Bahia State, is described herein. The new taxon differs from its congeners by presenting infraorbital 1 with well-developed ventral laminar expansion, nuchal plate nearly reaching to or sometimes contacting posterior process of parieto-supraoccipital, anterior tip of nuchal plate just posterior to dorsal margin of first dorsolateral body plate, and blotches on dorsal half of dorsolateral body plates and/or ventral half of ventrolateral body plates fused with midlateral series of blotches, forming three or four enlarged and oblique black blotches. |

Aurigoniella meridionalis, sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Morretes and São José dos Pinhais, Paraná State, southern Brazil. It can be easily distinguished from the Aurigoniella type-species, A. dutrai, by its distinct color pattern, smaller size, shorter crown, hindleg knees attaining lateral lobe of pronotum, aedeagus broadest height around mid-length, and paraphyses ramus biramous. |

Nine Neotropical species of Bruchomyia Alexander, 1920 have been previously described, all from South America. A new species of this rare genus, collected in caverns of the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, is described and named Bruchomyia mineira sp. nov. The new species is morphologically similar to B. argentina Alexander, 1920, but they can be differentiated from each other by characters of the eyes, M2 vein and base of gonostylus. |

Characidium samurai, a species of the family Crenuchidae apparently endemic to rio das Almas and rio Vermelho basins, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species is readily distinguishable from its congeners, except C. lanei, by having a dark lateral band along the head and body that is particularly broad from the rear of the head to the end of the caudal peduncle (1.5 or 2 scales wide) and by the absence of dark bars or blotches on the ventral half of the body. Characidium samurai differs from C. laneiby having the lateral band with straight borders overall (vs.lateral band with somewhat irregular borders due to blotches extending dorsally or ventrally), anal fin ii,7-8 (vs. ii,6), and 4 horizontal scale rows above the lateral line and 4 below (vs. 5/3).... |

ABSTRACT Cryptophion Viereck, 1913 is a small Neotropical genus of Campopleginae, with seven described species, two recorded from Brazil. In this paper, a new species from the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil is described and illustrated. In addition, a key to the Brazilian species is provided. Cryptophion atlanticus sp. nov. (holotype female deposited in DCBU: Brazil, São Paulo, São Luiz do Paraitinga, Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar) is diagnosed by mesoscutum more or less uniformly punctate, except the notaular region with coarser and irregular rugae, scutellum bearing irregular lateral longitudinal rugae; forewing with areolet not distinctly petiolate above and hind tarsal claw pectinate, but with a large space in the middle, and distinctly... |

Kingsleya castrensis sp. nov., a pseudothelphusid crab is described and illustrated from the Xingu River, state of Pará, southern Amazon region, Brazil. The new species is characterized by the male first gonopod bearing a large, well-developed apical plate, with a broadly rounded, thick distal lobe. New records of Kingsleya junki Magalhães, 2003 extend the distribution of this species eastward to the Tocantins River basin, in the state of Pará, Brazil. |

Neoplecostomus jaguari, a new neoplecostomine, is described based on material from the rio Jaguari, rio Tietê basin, southeastern Brazil. The new species differs from all congeners by having a conspicuous sexual dimorphism: females with 30-38 teeth in the dentary and 30-39 in the premaxilla, and males with 13-18 and 14-20 teeth, respectively (vs. number of teeth in the dentary and premaxilla approximately equivalent in all other species, except for N. langeanii in the premaxilla); females with larger mandibullary width, 18.5-21.6% HL, males 11.8-15.7% HL (vs.mandibullary width in males and females approximately equivalent); females with teeth longer and thin, males with teeth shorter and robust (vs. teeth similar in other species, except for N. langeaniiin... |
